This is the token of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I have set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between Me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow is seen in the cloud, that I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
— Spoken by YHWH, The Creator God
What does God’s word have to say about the flood of Noah? Was it truly a global flood which destroyed all life, or was it a localized flood which affected only a part of our globe? How did a flood destroy all fish and aquatic life? Did Noah really build a big boat? From where did all the water come to cover the Earth? Where did all the water go to after the flood? How did all the animals fit on the ark? Who fed all the animals while they were enclosed in the ark for a year? What was done with the large volume of waste and excrement during the period of a year on the Ark? These are typical questions from people who are somewhat cynical concerning the story of Noah’s flood. Perhaps they are questions about which all of us should wonder. Are there any good answers? Let’s discuss this subject and try and determine what might be good responses to the above questions.
But before we attempt to provide any specific answers to the questions above, let’s first develop some background information. Let’s consider the world prior to the flood and what it might have been like. Upon reflection, it appears obvious that the world was vastly different when Noah was born from what it became during his lifetime. Noah very really stepped out of the ark onto a “new world.” His old world was no more. Peter addressed this world change in the following manner.
II Peter 3:5-7 – For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Here, we can see that the Apostle Peter, in God’s Holy Bible, has told us unequivocally that our world of today is not the same as the world that existed prior to the flood. What was the world like prior to the flood? Let’s try and imagine what it was like.
It would seem that we can safely assume that there was only one language in the world prior to the flood. The world had undoubtedly grown quite populace prior to the flood, and there may likely have been various dialects, but it is probable that there was only one language. Adam was taught a perfect language by God (very possibly a language from which our Modern Hebrew has developed). As the first human created, it would be logical that Adam was the “Patriarch of the World,” and therefore the leader of the world until his death. He would surely have taught this same language to all of his progeny. Should we not assume that Adam was the most intelligent man whom God has placed in this world? Would it be logical to think that reproductions of the original would ever be better or greater than the original? Adam was the original and God specifically stated that His original Creation was good (Genesis 1:31). Man has continually degenerated since the original sin of Adam and Eve. It would seem then that Adam and Eve were the perfect specimens of all of humanity which has since existed. Adam was smarter than Einstein or Newton or Shakespeare or Copernicus or De Vinci. Adam was stronger and faster than the best of the Olympic athletes. Adam was better looking than any Hollywood actor, and he could sing better than Pavarotti. We can make similar statements about Eve. Eve was undoubtedly the most beautiful, voluptuous, and intelligent lady who has ever lived. Eve had the voice to put any songbird to shame. Eve had an uncanny memory. Eve could write the most beautiful poetry imaginable. Eve could jump higher, swim faster, throw farther and straighter, and dance more gracefully than any lady we have ever seen attempt these things. With the exceptions of Jesus and Samson and perhaps a few others who were specifically blessed by God, Adam and Eve were the best physical specimens the world has ever seen, and they were the leaders of billions of people during their lifetime. Adam and Eve were the parents of all of us, and they set the standard and the direction for the shape of the social world to come. Aside from the very high probability that Father Adam and Mother Eve were physically better than are we, in another sense they were just like us (with the exception of course that neither of them had a belly button). God blessed Adam and Eve and gave them a commission.
Genesis 1-28 – And God blessed them, and God said to them––Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth, and subdue it,––and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the bird of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth on the land.
From their commission which is stated above, we can learn that the world prior to the flood – at least in the early years – was astonishingly different than the world of today. Adam and Eve were told to fill the Earth (with their progeny), and subdue it and all the living creatures. Because we know that God said that his Creation was good, and because we see in the above verse that God blessed Adam and Eve prior to giving them their charge, we can know that originally they inherently possessed the necessary components to fulfill their duty. They could fill the Earth and they could have dominion over all living creatures. Since we have no reason to believe that Adam and Eve were given any weapons at the beginning, we can assume that they were to have dominion over lions, tigers, dragons (dinosaurs), and grizzly bears simply through their own inherent physical and mental abilities. We can also know that in the beginning, animals such as these were not ferocious and deadly, since prior to the original sin there was no death. There is another reason by which we can know that the original animal kingdom was peaceful: we know that when God eventually restores this world the animal kingdom will reside in peace with all of Earth’s creatures including man.
Isaiah 11:6 – The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
If peace in the animal kingdom is to be God’s idea for his Kingdom, it is only logical that such peace must also have been a part of his original Creation.
In the beginning, God’s original Creation was truly a different world from our world today. And then came the serpent. And then came the original sin. And then came the banishment from the Garden of Eden. The world was changed at that point. To what degree it was changed we do not know, but we can surmise from the writings of the Apostle Paul that perhaps the original sin affected the entire universe. Very possibly the entire universe has been in a state of decay since the sin of Adam and Eve.
Romans 8:21-22 – Because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.
Though it is something we do not and seemingly cannot know at this point in history, there are various students of the Holy Bible who think that based on minor circumstantial evidence, just perhaps, Adam and Eve were originally beings of light, i.e. they were literally composed of light prior to the sin in the Garden of Eden. We can be certain that whatever happened at that point in time, the consequences for both humanity and the universe are addressed only in very minimal and essential basics in the Book of Genesis.
How often have we considered the King James translation’s version of the description of the original sin? Most of us picture – or try to picture – a snake that could talk and persuade Mother Eve to eat an apple that she was not supposed to eat. We then suppose that this caused all snakes to have to crawl on their belly from that point forward. In truth, it was not a snake, but a serpent. Also, though we do not know exactly what the forbidden fruit actually was, it was never referred to as an apple. Beyond these simple misunderstandings, the translators of this story have very probably missed another significant point or two when it comes to the “serpent.” It is practically certain that the serpent was a fallen angel. There are millennia old non-canonical records which describe a conversation between Abraham and a spiritual being who was described by Abraham as a serpent with the general appearance of a human. I.e., the being stood upright with two arms, two legs, two eyes, one mouth, et cetera; but further description by Abraham told of a scaly and reptilian appearance on this spiritual creature. Many people in our world today profess of seeing these same type beings. Is it not likely that Eve was speaking with a quite cunning and intelligent spiritual being who had the appearance of a serpent with reptilian features? Is not Satan described in Revelation as “the ancient serpent”?
Re 12:9 – And the great dragon was cast out,––the ancient serpent, he that is called Adversary and the Satan, that deceiveth the whole habitable world,––he was cast to the earth, and his messengers, with him, were cast.
Satan is not and was not a hissing snake coiled around a tree, but it does seem that perhaps when he appears physically as himself he possesses the appearance of a dragon or a reptilian creature or a serpent. Let’s note that a serpent is a reptile; let’s also note that in Sanskrit the root word SERAPH means reptile; let’s also note that one of the ranks of angels is SERAPHIM. It was such a being as this who was the adversary of Adam and Eve, and it is this same being who is still today the adversary of the followers of Jesus the Christ.
For the description of this scene in the Garden of Eden there are certainly alternate and non-traditional translations which are possible from the original Hebrew. Such alternate translations can paint an entirely different picture of the scene in the Garden of Eden when the serpent approached Mother Eve. One possibility proposed by Mr. Jim Wilhelmsen in his book “Beyond Science Fiction” is that the serpent was condemned not to “crawl in the dust on its belly,” but rather it was condemned to “reproduce itself outside of its belly.” Such an interpretation is not outside the possible meanings of the original Hebrew, and it is indeed supported by Strong’s Concordance. Whether this was the intended definition of the original Hebrew in this particular instance, the concept supposed here does demonstrate that true and actual knowledge of the event in the Garden of Eden could quite likely tell us something different than the seeming fairy tale provided by the King James translators. Such an alternate translation also fits quite nicely with abundant and often reported secular evidence concerning a race of beings who cannot reproduce in the normal fashion, but must depend upon test tube reproduction and genetic manipulation in order to continue their physical existence. That is, they clone themselves (outside their bellies). For a logical alternative to this passage in Genesis 3 and several other difficult passages in the Holy Bible, I highly recommend the reading of Jim Wilhelmsen’s book “Beyond Science Fiction.” Though it may not be absolutely correct in this instance, it is quite likely closer to the truth than is the vague fairy tale-like description we encounter in the King James translation.
Let’s now further discuss just what type world might have existed prior to the flood. We’ve addressed the probable skills and talents of Adam. We know that Adam was the physical father of us all, and thus was almost certainly the leader of the world during his lifetime. As the patriarch of every human being who was on the Earth, and being the man who originally established the social norms for the entire human race, it would be logical to assume that during his lifetime, Adam was THE MAN. He was the leader of the world. So, how much of a world was he leading? How many people might have lived in Adam’s world? Let’s make some simple assumptions for the sake of a conceptual population growth curve during Adam’s lifetime. Since the world was empty of humans other than Adam and Eve at the beginning, and since God instructed that they be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28), let’s assume that they had ten children. Isn’t that a conservative number since ten is not a lot of children for an empty world, especially when the life spans of the parents prior to the flood exceeded 900 years; perhaps several hundred of those years were “child-bearing” years? To make our model simple, let’s assume that ALL couples prior to the flood had ten children and that the children were evenly divided as males and females. Let’s further assume that all people married and had children. Now let’s assume that all the couples were exactly fifty years of age when all ten of their children were born (a silly assumption I know, but it makes the calculations much easier). Let’s make one further assumption in the interest of being conservative: all people (except Adam) died at exactly 500 years of age. Since most everyone mentioned in scripture prior to the flood lived much longer than 500 years, this would add to the conservative nature of our population model. With these simple and basic assumptions, how many people would have populated the Earth during Adam’s lifetime? After doing the calculations, we discover that shortly after Adam turned 400 hundred years old, the population of the Earth had reached one million people. Just 200 years later, on Adam’s 600th birthday anniversary, the population would have reached over 600 million people. By Adam’s 700th year, the world population would have become greater than 15 billion people, or about 250% of what was the Earth’s population in the year 2000 A.D. Shortly after Adam’s 900th birthday, the population of the world would have reached 10 trillion people. And yes, that is a totally unrealistic number of people to inhabit the Earth. But the model does demonstrate that it is very realistic for us to think that the world could have been full of people during Adam’s lifetime.
Let’s look at just one more figure before we leave this population model. At the time when the flood occurred in the 1656th year after Creation, this particular model provides a truly astronomical population for the world. Using our assumptions noted above for this model, we can conclude that just prior to the flood there would be more than enough people alive to completely cover the entire surface of the Earth with no oceans. Indeed there would be enough people to have standing room only on over 200 million planets the size of the Earth. We know that this is an absurd number, but it does demonstrate that the world was likely full of people at the time of the flood.
Now let’s consider the following probable facts. Adam, to some degree, was the leader of the world, and as such he probably was able to retain a much greater global unity than what we see in our world today. Adam was an extremely intelligent man, since he was God’s own original. Adam’s immediate descendants were quite likely very intelligent also. The people of Adam’s world had several hundred years during which they could study, research and accumulate knowledge – as opposed to the few decades which people have in our world today. All the peoples of the world spoke the same language, and thus there were no communication problems to inhibit the growth of knowledge and technology. The world was full of people, and thus there were a large number of scientists who had no communication problems in sharing their research data. The teaching of scientific information to young and inquisitive new scientists at the university level posed fewer problems since there were no language barriers in the learning process. Scientists had fewer political restraints on the sharing of their research since there was a greater global unity and possibly a near total lack of national competition. Given these conditions, should we not expect that the knowledge and technology prior to the flood vastly exceeded the scientific information available in our world today? Did not Solomon intimate this possibility to us in his writing of Ecclesiastes?
Ecclesiastes 1:9 – The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
After contemplating this potential technology during Adam’s lifetime, let’s then consider that Noah was born only 126 years after Adam’s death. Let’s also consider that Noah almost certainly knew and spoke with several older people in his family who had walked and talked with Adam, and who very possibly had close personal relationships with Adam. Let’s then consider that Noah had 600 YEARS in which to accumulate knowledge and information in all areas of study prior to being enclosed in the Ark by God. Noah was well prepared to lay the foundation for a new human social system on Planet Earth.
The description of the Ark itself is evidence of both Noah’s wealth and of his scientific knowledge. The massive size of the Ark tells us that it was a project which was accomplished by a vastly wealthy man. After the flood, not until the 20th century was a ship of comparable size to the Ark ever constructed. The dimensions of the Ark are described in proportions that are scientifically perfect. The relationship between the length, width and height of the Ark are the most mathematically ideal which can be constructed for surviving aquatic storms. These perfect mathematic proportions were only recently learned by modern science.
Another interesting bit of trivia about the Ark is that it was probably completed years before the flood. Why do we suppose that? The walls of the Ark were covered inside and outside with pitch. This tar coating would result in a very malodorous and probably noxious environment for any inhabitants of such an enclosed space. Such fumes could be produced by the coating for several years and perhaps even a few decades. It is therefore likely that the population of the world had ample opportunity to witness Noah’s escape plan, and to make their own decisions concerning God’s warning for years prior to the flood.
Genesis 6:14 -- Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
Why did the population of the world pay so little attention to Noah’s warnings? Let’s understand the concept which Noah was preaching to the world, and let’s remember that the world had total ignorance and somewhat understandable disbelief of such a concept. Noah was telling the world population that it was going to RAIN and that the whole world would be flooded. Why would rain in itself be such a novel concept to the world? Until the great flood, it had never rained on the Earth! How do we know that it had never rained? The SIGN of God’s covenant with man AFTER the flood provides us with reasonable proof that there had been no rain prior to the great flood. The RAINBOW did not appear until after Noah’s flood. Why is that? Should we think that the flood changed the laws of physics in the universe in such a manner that rainbows could now appear? Such an idea is not reasonable, thus we conclude that RAIN itself was a new and unheard of concept. Do we have other scriptural support for such an idea? Yes, we do. God told us in Genesis 2 that water came up from the Earth.
Genesis 2:5-6 – …..the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth……But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
There are a couple of other supporting ideas that we must consider when addressing the lack of any rain prior to the flood. There are various legends through the world telling that there was once a canopy of water which surrounded the Earth at the top of the atmosphere. Such a possibility is not contrary to the concepts of Creation as presented in Genesis. If there was such a shroud of protection around the Earth what might be the resulting consequences? The water would have created an atmospheric pressure that was significantly greater than the pressure we experience today. The water would also have acted as a filter of sorts for potentially harmful light or radiation waves. The increased pressure would have produced a sort of hyperbaric chamber over the entire Earth. The results of such an atmosphere would potentially be a healthier population and an increased lifespan. Experiments with such chambers have shown that plants also can grow larger and healthier.
Tampa Hyperbaric Enterprise, Inc. has published the following: “Hyperbaric oxygen reduces tissue damage in radiation tissue damage. Surgeons have used hyperbaric therapy to improve the outcome of compromised skin grafts and to enhance healing in selected problem wounds. Hyperbaric therapy has an anti-bacterial effect against anaerobic bacteria. Immune system blood cells function better to kill pathogenic microbes when oxygen concentrations are optimal. This action helps control infections such as osteomyelitis (unmanageable bone disease). Improved immunity can reduce chronic infections such as Actinomycosis (caused by the anaerobic gram-positive microorganism Actinomyces israelii; control bacterial infections associated with clostridial myonercrosis (gangrene) and necrotizing soft tissue infections (deadly skin ulcers). The combined action of hyperbaric oxygen helps improve outcomes in selected problem wounds that might otherwise progress toward amputation.”
The Health Canada website states: “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established medical treatment. In April 2005, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society recognized the therapy as an effective treatment for 13 specific conditions:
- embolisms (air or gas bubbles in the bloodstream, which may travel to the brain or lungs)
- carbon monoxide poisoning (from inhaling smoke or car exhaust)
- gas gangrene
- crush injury, Compartment Syndrome and other acute traumatic problems where blood flow is reduced or cut off (e.g., frostbite)
- decompression sickness (the bends)
- enhancement of healing for wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers
- exceptional blood loss (anemia)
- intracranial abscess (an accumulation of pus in the brain)
- necrotizing soft tissue infections (flesh-eating disease)
- osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- delayed radiation injury (e.g., radiation burns that develop after cancer therapy)
- skin grafts and flaps that are not healing well
- thermal burns (e.g., from fire or electrical sources)”
We see from the above the potential for health which may have existed on the Earth prior to the flood. Could this be at least a part of the reason for the long life spans which we read about in the pre-flood years?
Another possibility exists for the source of the floodwaters and it is a somewhat provocative idea. There is historical literature and data which suggest that during the earlier millennia of Earth’s existence, the Planet Mars had a somewhat erratic or different orbit than that which we now observe for Mars. This information relates that at approximate periods of 54 years, the orbit of Mars came very close to the orbit of Earth. These close orbital paths often times resulted in Earthly catastrophes which were caused by the gravitational forces of Mars as it approached closely to the Earth. It has been proposed by a few – and not without a modicum of evidence – that the flood waters may have been somehow electromagnetically attracted to the Earth and then transferred from the Plant Mars to Earth. This idea of the water coming from Mars is offered only as speculation and in the interest of establishing that there might be possibilities for the source of the flood waters which are beyond our present knowledge to properly grasp.
All of the above ideas bring us back to what the Apostle Peter stated in the quote early on in this chapter. The world that was then has perished. We are truly in a vastly different world than the one inhabited by the ancestors of Noah.
Let’s begin now to address some of the other questions which we proposed in the opening of this chapter. Was the flood truly a global flood which destroyed life, or was it a localized flood which affected only a part of our globe?
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
Genesis 7:17-23 – And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters. And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
As we can see from the above scriptures, God did indeed bring a GLOBAL flood upon the world; there was nothing localized about it. We can also see that “all flesh wherein is the breath of life” was destroyed from the Earth. A careful reading of that phrase also answers the questions of the critics when they ask how a flood could kill aquatic life. Aquatic life was obviously NOT all destroyed; fish do not have the “breath of life” in the sense noted here. Fish have gills and do not breathe in the sense as do land animals.
We’ve already noted in some of the paragraphs above the possibilities as to from where the water for the flood might have come. But there is one source which we did not mention. Apparently an abundance of water also came up from the ground.
Genesis 7: 11-12 – In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
Genesis 8:1-2 -- And remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.
But, where did all the water go to after the flood?
Genesis 8:3-5 – And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
From these scriptures we can see that the waters returned to the fountains of the deep. There is undoubtedly a vast supply of water under the Earth. During the flood, some physical (or perhaps spiritual) force caused the waters to break onto the surface, but they returned after the period of about one year.
How did all the animals fit on the ark? Who fed all the animals while they were enclosed in the ark for a year? The entire Christian world and a large percentage of the remaining world have heard the story of Noah and his Ark. Most all of these people know that Noah took with him two of each animal kind – one male and one female. Many of these people then assume that there was not enough space for so many animals. How do we respond to these assertions? First, let’s know that the problem (if indeed it was a problem) was even greater than what people suppose. Noah took not only two of each kind of animal, but in many cases he took fourteen instead of two. Yes, God specifically instructed Noah to take SEVEN pairs of many kinds of animals.
Genesis 7:2-3 – Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
We see from these verses that indeed there were SEVEN pairs of all clean animals and SEVEN pairs of all birds! So how full was the Ark? Experts have noted that the average size of the animals in the world is perhaps just a bit smaller than the typical sheep. If we do take the total of all the “KINDS” of animals – not SPECIES, but KINDS – in the world and assume that they are around the size of a sheep, we find that the question really soon becomes, “What did Noah do with all that extra room in the Ark”? There was indeed ample space for thousands of animals on the Ark. Let’s not forget that the Ark was HUGE.
When thinking of all the animals on the Ark, let’s remember what is meant by KIND and that this concept differs from SPECIES. As an example, in our world today we have dogs of all varieties. We also have wolves, coyotes, dingoes and other types of wild dogs. All of these came from the same two parents which were on the Ark with Noah.
Let’s also consider some additional ideas concerning the animals on the Ark. First, God did not have to bring adult animals on the Ark. He could have brought very young, and therefore small, pairs of all the different kinds of animals to Noah. This might be logical for another reason also; these animals were going to emerge onto a totally new world and thus a new way of life for them. Would it not be simpler for the animals to learn of their new lifestyle as babies, or at least at a very young age? Aren’t we familiar with the idea that “it’s hard to teach an old dog a new trick”? Very possibly all the animals were quite small.
Considering the size of the animals, let’s also address that YES, there WERE dinosaurs on the Ark. God created them in the beginning and God placed them on the Ark with Noah. (There are indeed many records of dragons existing in the world until just a few hundred years ago. Dinosaurs are nothing more than dragons, and they did NOT become extinct 65 million years ago). Let’s remember also that dinosaurs were reptiles and that reptiles continue to grow throughout their life. Living before the flood in an atmosphere that resembles a hyperbaric chamber, the dinosaurs would have grown quite old and quite large. Thus we have fossil evidence of the huge dinosaurs of the past.
It is even possible that many of the animals such as dinosaurs and reptiles and birds could have originally boarded the Ark as eggs. Noah’s generation surely had the ability, the knowledge, and the technical expertise to artificially incubate eggs. To carry this type of thought even further, it seems that it is not out of the realm of possibility that Noah could have been a master geneticist and that he carried with him the ability to genetically reproduce all the animals of the world! In reality, the animals on the Ark may have represented all of the categories mentioned above; i.e. perhaps the ark contained some adult animals, some very young animals, some eggs of not yet hatched animals, and maybe even some DNA material with which Noah might work to rebuild the social order of the entire ecosystem.
How were all the animals fed? Perhaps they were not fed! Perhaps they slept through the flood. Or perhaps there was a system of compartments on the Ark where the animals could feed themselves. It is a possibility that the animals hibernated while on the Ark and thus needed little or no food. Yes, we know that not all animals routinely hibernate, but could not God have put them all in a state of hibernation? Or we could ask even another question in the realm of hibernation or suspended animation. We have discussed earlier the almost definite possibility of the technology prior to the flood. Is it so out of the realm of possibility that Noah himself could have artificially induced a state of suspended animation in most of (or all of) the animals? Our science of today can produce suspended animation, or else brain surgery and heart surgery would be a bit of a problem would it not? Certainly Noah had access to information concerning the ability to induce suspended animation and the information he could take with him on the Ark would have been far superior to anything we might have in our world today. These ideas are not absolute facts; these ideas are not scriptural; these ideas are truly suppositions. But neither are these ideas contrary to scripture. Scripture is simply silent as concerns these possibilities. Whether the activities onboard the Ark were similar to the thoughts above, we do not know. But let’s please avoid the egregious and arrogant mistake of assuming that the knowledge and technology of Noah and Noah’s world were primitive. Such a conclusion is simply not logical. Above all we should conclude that Noah had access to some type of knowledge and he had some manner in which to address all the problems that might arise on the Ark.
If the animals were not hibernating and if they were indeed eating on a routine basis, how was the animal waste and excrement handled? Why should we not be able to conceive that perhaps the Ark contained a compartment which was built to accommodate the quick and complete organic decomposition of physical animal waste? Noah could very well have taken a power source with him onto the Ark which was capable of powering such a small sewer treatment plant. Again, the truth is we don’t know the exact answer to some of these questions, but let’s never trap ourselves by supposing that Noah was limited to our present society’s idea of how primitive Noah’s world was. Noah did not come from a primitive world which lacked for knowledge and technology.
By Noah’s standards, it is almost certain that our modern technology of today is indeed the primitive society. This brings us back to the question of just exactly what did Noah do with all of that extra room on the Ark? Do we not suppose that he took tons of supplies and tons of “information” into his new world? Would we not want to take a vast library with us if we were in Noah’s shoes? Would we not want all of the best tools, machines, and utensils we could possibly squeeze into the Ark so as to make our new life a little easier? Would we not want to take geographic and astronomical information to help find our way, and to re-establish a semblance of an educated society in the new world? Noah may even have taken with him the genetic information and the proper tools to more hurriedly establish a larger world population through some type of cloning or other test tube means of having a large family quickly. Though Noah started out in a completely new and empty world, it is probable that in another sense he lacked for nothing – he brought it with him.
Genesis 8:15-19 – And God spake unto Noah, saying, Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee. Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth. And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him: Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.
